Montreal DJ/producer Kaytranada is celebrating the release of his debut album 99.9% with a video for Lite Spots. Directed by Martin C Pariseau, the music video features Kaytranada building a dancing robot while sampling the beats of Pontos de Luz (Light Spots), a 1973 song composed by Brazilian artists Jards Macalé and Waly Salomão, and recorded by Gal Costa for the quintessential album Índia (1973). The lyrics in Portuguese “I feel content, completely content” are enthusiastically repeated over a futuristic beat.
Despite the fact that the original song is boldly heard and has the same name on Kaytranada’s track, there is no credit to the songwriters or the singer on their official website, although music publications such as AllMusic have done so.
American DJ and hip hop producer Madlib, one of Kaytranada’s music mentors, also features Pontos de Luz in his album Medicine Show #2: Flight To Brazil, dedicated entirely to Brazilian music.
